Even before you enter the grounds of the temple, you can feel
the tranquil atmosphere of the area. Located in a hutong, an old residential area; take your time to look around.
You will walk through a pailou, a ceremonial decorative gate, one of the few remaining in Beijing. Stop to "dismount
from your horse" as requested by the carved stelae, and continue on foot. Get the feel of old Beijing.

Confucius (551-479 BC) was a philosopher, thinker, political figure, and
educator in ancient China. His teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced the thought and life in China, as
well as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. He emphasized governmental and personal morality, correctness of social relationships,
justice and sincerity.

Within the Temple of Confucius complex, you
will find the Temple (Kong Miao) and the Imperial College (Guozijian).
The temple has a permanent display of artifacts related to the history and culture of Beijing. On the grounds of the Imperial
College, also called the Imperial Academy, there is an exhibit about the life and times of Confucius and Confucianism. There
are often temporary exhibits that are held here also. See the exhibits,
visit both the temple and the college; take time to wander. History is everywhere you look. One of the most impressive sights
are the 198 stone tablets recording the names of over 51,624 students who passed the notoriously difficult civil
service exam that would guarantee them a place in court life. Look also for the 700 year old cypress tree (Touch Evil
Cypress) which is associated with a legend.

The temple gets busy in late May when students, who are preparing
to take the university entrance exams, come here to ask the great sage for a bit of assistance.
