A Little Bit of Everything

The market started in the early 1990's in a dirt field a few kilometers south of the railroad tracks. Local Beijingers called it the Dirt Market, which described its original floor. At the beginning, it was a local market and vendors paid no rent. They just carried in what they wished to sell and spread it out on a blanket or the bare ground. Over time, word spread about the market, and collectors came to search through the treasures. The name of the market, Panjiayuan, translates to Pan Family Garden, and historical records reveal that the market site was long ago a typical clan village of the Pan family.
