If you are looking for Chinese art with a little bit more of a contemporary feel, you will be interested in Dashanzi 798 Art District. This sprawling complex is filled with cutting-edge galleries, artists' studios, boutiques, art bookstores, cafes and restaurants. This is Asia's largest contemporary art district. Art here, runs the gamut: from sculpture, paintings, photography, performance art to commercial art forms. The art is mostly Chinese, but Westerners are still well-represented. Often described as China's SoHo or Greenwich Village, this two million square foot complex is definitely the epicenter of the Chinese art scene.

Designed by East German architects in the early 1950's, this former industrial site is perfect for its present use. Take note of the Bauhaus influenced architecture. Arched ceilings and use of natural light are signature marks of the style.
