History Of Songzhuang Art Community

In 1995, the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) artist community was dismantled, and some of the artists moved to Songzhuang Village. Looking for a quiet environment, lower rent, and larger studio space; they found it in Beijing's eastern countryside.

With the growth of the Chinese art market, Songzhuang has undergone a dramatic expansion of its artist community. Today, roughly 4000 artists, including painters, sculptures, poets, writers, calligraphers, art critics, photographers, etc., call Songzhuang and the surrounding villages home. The artists are relatively young and are famous for their contemporary and innovative artwork. Most of artists are freelancer, and their artwork is shown in Danshanzi 798 Art District galleries as well as in Europe and the United States.
