Bishu Shanzhuang, The Imperial Summer Retreat
|
A tour to Chengde takes you to another important site of the Qing Emperors' imperial world. The Manchu Qing, Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), accidentally discovered the area during a hunting trip. The emperor and his Manchu nobility came here to hunt, fish, and partake in archery competitions. Over time, the area grew in importance and the court spent more time here, and Chengde became the seat of political power in China while the court was in residence. |
Chengde has not been found by many visitors to China, which is a shame. With the Yanshan Mountains as a spectacular backdrop, the area is a beautiful place to visit. With its many magnificent examples of imperial architecture, it certainly is a historical site worth taking the time to explore.
