Do you want to see a part of Beijing that travelers do not often get a chance to see? As a side-trip, or in combination with a trip to the Great Wall; Hong Luo Si (Red Snail Temple) is an interesting place to visit. Located in Huairou County, about 57 kilometers north of Beijing; quiet Red Snail Temple is a perfect blend of the spiritual and nature.

Built in 348 A.D., the Red Snail Temple was originally called Great Brightness Temple (Da Ming Si). According to an ancient legend, the Jade Emperor's two princesses descended to earth, and became the embodiment of two red snails. These two snails were found in a pool behind the temple and at night they gave off strange lights and were worshipped by the local villagers. Eventually the name of the temple and the mountain were changed to Hong Luo (Red Snail).

Visit the temple, climb to the top of the mountain to see the Great Wall of China in the distance, and wander the tree lined paths. There is must to see here.
