One of the Antique Stores on Liulichang Jie

Liulichang (Glazed Tile Factory), named for a factory that once made glazed roof tiles for the palaces and temples of Beijing, is now a wonderful place to shop for traditional brushes, paper, ink sticks, rubbing stones, and other artist supplies. Shop here also for traditional art work, antiques, art books, ceramics, porcelain, and tea. There are many long-established stores on Liulichang. It's a great place to browse for souvenirs and gifts, but be prepared to bargain.

First built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), its name, Liulichang, dates back to the Ming Dynasty when five kilns were established nearby to produce glazed tiles for the new Imperial Palace (Forbidden City). Later, during the Qing Dynasty, it became a hangout for scholars studying for the Imperial exams. To make ends meet, they would sell calligraphy and writings. Soon, stores selling art supplies sprang up, and then other shops opened to sell the works of the students. The street has been restored to its late Qing Dynasty period. It is still home to the most famous art-supply store in China, Rongbao Zhai.
