Beautiful Beihai Park, Walking Tour

Ancient Imperial Gardens, Tranquil Temples

A Beijing Journey Travel Recommended Side Trip

An Imperial Garden in Beihai Park

Take the Time to Enjoy the Beauty of Beihai Park.

Beihai Park (Beihai Gongyuan) is one of the oldest, largest, and best preserved ancient imperial gardens in China; and numerous historically important structures, palaces and temples are located in the park. The construction was started in 938 AD, under the reign of Emperor Huitong, and additions and changes were made throughout the reigns of the emperors that followed. Emperor Qianlong is responsible for the design and layout of Beihai Park as it is seen today. Originally part of the Forbidden City, Beihai Park was opened to the public in 1925. In 1961, Beihai Park was officially listed as a key historic site under state protection.

Walk, Stroll, Participate, Relax, Climb, Sight-See, Learn, Explore.

In all seasons, a walking tour of Beihai Park not only is a great way to spend several peaceful hours, but also an opportunity to people-watch. The past and the present are perfectly blended here. The splendor of the gardens, the quiet of the temples, the Beijingers singing and exercising are just a few of the reasons to take the time to visit.

Enjoy the View From the Five Dragon Pavilions, the Fishing Spot of the Emperors.

Beihai Park, as was the case with many Chinese classical, imperial gardens, was built to imitate many well-known scenic spots and architecture from various regions of China. Artificial hills, pavilions, halls, temples and covered corridors are blended with trees, hills and the lake in harmony of man and nature. Not many tourists find there way to Beihai Park, which is a shame.
